JB- Do you remember that first song you wrote?
LD- Oh yeah. It was Fine, Fine Baby I wrote for a musical group called The Romeos.
JB- That love has brought you to today. You're working on Broadway.
LD- Yeah.
JB- You've got a few projects in the works there, I know First Wives Club is right around the corner.
LD- That's right.
JB- Anybody heading to San Diego in July needs to check it out.
LD- Yeah, that's right. (laughing) I think it's going to be… well, it's my first venture into the musical theatre, but it's something that I've worked for for a long time and I've been chasing it ever since I was a teenager. Because, actually, I really wanted to go into theatre when I was in my teens and I sort of got waylaid by Berry Gordy and Motown in Detroit and found myself writing all of these other things at that particular time.
JB- Tell me about the show then. Why are you working on it? Just because you've always wanted to do it? Is there something about First Wives Club that just had you hooked?
LD- Well, the First Wives Club, the movie, came out in 1996, I believe. And it was something that I always loved. When Paramount called me and asked me would I be interested in doing this new movie as a musical and I said, "Yeah, I've been chasing this thing for years - being in the musical theatre." They asked me would I mind rejoining or re-teaming with the Holland Brothers? We had broke up in '72 so we hadn't done any work together for quite a while. So, when we got together and got into a rehearsal room we found out what we did together, that magic was sort of still there and they wanted to participate in this theatre business, too. So, that's what happened: we got together and we started hashing out songs and ideas and here we are now. By July this year we'll be at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego for the first workshop, you might say.
JB- Good luck with that. What other shows are you working on right now?
LD- I'm doing a lot of things that I've been working on for the past 15 years. A thing called Angels that is a fantasy about Beethoven. That's going to be shortly coming. I'm more or less through with that as well. We figure around 2010, that will be coming out. And then I'm working with Solange - is a sister of Beyonce (Knowles) - and another little girl named Nikki Jean, who's a very good singer and artist that's making her rounds. I think she has some dealings with Oprah now about giving her her own show. It's been a very busy time for me so I'm very happy about that.

JB- You're mentioning some of the people you're working with, you've also worked with some of the big names in Motown, but also people like Usher, Mary J. Blige, Kanye - is there anyone right now we should be watching for… who is your pick as the big name in 2009?
LD- I think it would be Nikki Jean. Solange, she's already been out. I think the album I did with her Six O'Clock Blues is out now, matter of fact. She'll do well with it, I believe. And also, like I said, Nikki Jean I think is the new hot thing, you might say.

JB- Lamont Dozier, thanks for joining us. Be sure to check out First Wives Club hitting the stage in July.
LD- In July at the Old Globe Theatre.
JB- And moving to the Great White Way next March, is that right?
LD- That's right.
JB- Congratulations on all your accomplishments. Best of luck with all the ventures. You truly are a legend, my friend. I appreciate you being on the show today.
LD- Thank you, Jeremy. I appreciate it.
JB- Take care.
LD- Goodbye.
