JB- I've been a writer for many years. I've heard writing isn't necessarily something you can teach. I've heard the same thing about rhythm. Is rhythm something you just have, or can you be taught to have rhythm?
MM- I think instinctively we all really are born with rhythm. You see it with infants the second that music is put on, and with just a little encouragement people start to move to music. Now, some people over the years, it's kind of like music has been taken away from them, I feel. But they can definitely learn it. For some it's going to be a real struggle and it takes more time. I've definitely taught people that I thought, Oh man, this guy has for sure… this is the person they talk about that has two left feet. But if somebody is determined and they really have a passion for something, then they can learn to dance. They could become really proficient dancers and really enjoy it for the rest of their life
JB- What is the secret to learning how to dance? Is it feeling the music? Just letting loose and not worrying about they look like? What is it?
MM- No, I think you have to take training. There are a few people in this world that are absolutely blessed -- we call them freestylers -- that you put on a song and they create all their own moves. Those people are truly blessed because not everybody is born like that. I think we look back on someone like Cedric Gardner (from season 3). Every time we put a different song on, or twist, they could come up with a totally different choreography and they have no idea what they just did. They couldn't necessarily repeat it, but what they did was absolutely amazing. Not everybody is blessed that way. I'm not that way myself. I had to be trained. I wasn't the most talented person out there, that's for sure. But I had a real strong work ethic, I had a real passion for it and there's a lot of people out there that are the same way. And if you've done a lot of sports in your young life, too, and you have a competitive nature… you have to be strong in that way. You can keep going back out there and taking No for an answer and get back up again. Don't take that No. You can learn how to dance.
JB- And I'm wondering if I can learn how to scream. So is it from the gut or…
MM- (laughing) Well, you know, that takes special practice. You definitely have to come to the Mary Murphy School of Screams in San Diego, California. (laughing)
JB- Perfect! When is it open?
MM- It's open all year! 24 hours a day!
JB- I'll give you a call.
MM- (laughing)
JB- So, the next season of Dance starts when?
