Jeremy Bradley- Stefanie Schaeffer, winner of NBC's The Apprentice is on the line with us now. Hello, Stefanie. How are things in warm California right now?
Stefanie Schaeffer- Hi, Jeremy. I think things are much warmer than they are in Winnipeg, for sure.
JB- I'm surprised you're not out golfing right now.
SS- No. Only because of the wind. We've had some incredible, incredible windy days for about the last four or five days, enough that it actually cancelled our filming. So, we're waiting. We're on wind watch, much to my dismay.
JB- I understand the snow also affects your game, doesn't it?
SS- Yes, it does. But it doesn't affect our skiing!
JB- There you go. There's always an audience for it.
SS- That's right.
JB- We'll talk about your love of that game [golf] in just a second, but you kinda have a connection with a small company. Not sure if many of our listeners have heard of it. Run by a man: Donald Trump. Let's talk about your time with the Trump Organization. After winning The Apprentice, what happened in your life? What was the process of events?
SS- My life took a 180-degree turn, obviously. That night pretty much changed everything that I knew to be normal. I was a practicing trial attorney before I went on The Apprentice. And, actually, ended up trying out for The Apprentice because the senior partner of my law firm encouraged me to go and try out. It wasn't anything I was interested in doing. They, for some reason, ended up choosing me and I ended up on the show and I'm highly competitive. Once I was there I thought, Well, I can't get fired now, I'll make my law firm look bad so I have to give it my best shot and I'm just very grateful that I ended up winning. And once I won, I thought I can't do a bad job and get fired in real life by Mr. Trump, so now that he hired me I have to do a bang-up job for him. From that night on, it was, OK, bring it on. Let's see what you can throw at me. So he sent me out to the Dominican Republic. I ended up quitting my job at my new law firm and they weren't pleased with it. So I had to leave them, they asked me to come back when I was finished with Mr. Trump -- which I was never able to do, unfortunately. And I went out to the Dominican and took over helping to build a resort for Mr. Trump. It was a golf resort and high-rise building. And then I ended up splitting my time between the Dominican… I actually asked for some extra work. So he sent me out to Las Vegas. I asked him if I could be on the West Coast, and I asked him if I could take over the real estate end of things in the high-rise that he was building. I started the operations of the Trump International Hotel and Towers in Vegas -- now, the tallest building in Las Vegas. The big, giant gold tower that says "Trump" is now open and operating, so we're very proud of that. That's how I spent my year-plus with Mr. Trump.
JB- So what you're saying is you've regretted it every since.
SS- Yeah, it was the worst decision ever! (laughing) No, I'm kidding. It was a lot of fun. It really was. It was a lot of hard work. I met a lot of really great people. Mr. Trump was great to work with. I learned a lot from him. And, like I said, I asked for a lot of extra work and being in the Dominican and being away from my family was tough, so I wanted to do a little more travelling back and forth so I split the time between the Dominican and New York and Las Vegas. And ultimately enjoying Las Vegas more just because it was within the U.S. and there was more for me to do there. Logistically that ended up being where I spent most of my time and I ended up being with them for more than a year. I stayed on and I wanted to see that project conclude and I took over as vice-president of marketing and sales for the Trump Organization. I oversaw all the sales of real estate of their luxury condominiums in that project. So, I headed up their real estate team and became a real estate broker so I could handle that project; and worked with their construction crew and got it up and running. And now it's a fully operational hotel-condominium project. In this economy, a lot of the projects along the strip shut down or went bankrupt before they could complete their projects, and Mr. Trump didn't do that. His projects finished. It was very successful. All but a few of the condominiums sold and closed. It's a really great place. It's beautiful.
